When: May 16, 2010
Where: Tyrone, GA
What: This is the American Diabetes Associations fundraiser for research to find a cure for Diabetes.
Why: This is an endeavor that is near and dear to my heart. My niece, Taryn, is 10 years old. She was diagnosed w/ Type I Diabetes when she was just 4. This is a lifelong struggle for her. As of now, there is no cure. From the beginning, she took 4 shots of insulin a day, plus countless finger pricks to check her blood sugar levels. She's had thousands of injections in her short life and one week-long hospital stay. She is currently on an insulin pump, but still endures about 4 finger pricks a day to monitor blood sugar levels. I would give my right arm, eye teeth, and any thing else if I could make her cured of this awful disease. Since I can't, I'm doing the next best thing. I'm raising money to find a cure for her and countless others who've been afflicted with Diabetes. I know at least one of our SCC members has Diabetes and one member's father died due to complications of diabetes.
I participated in the fund raising part of the Tour de Cure last year, but was unable to ride because of a death in the family that weekend.
I have taken the liberty to create a SCC/Epic team. I hope you will join me. Early registration is only $15 per individual. The ride is fully supported. Our team goal is just $1,000. We can increase that goal, if we need to. The link is:

Go to Georgia, from the drop-down box on the left. Select the Tyrone, GA 5/16/10 option. Search for our team name: Southern Crescent Cycling/Epic bikes.
Your participation and support is greatly appreciated.
Ann

Steve, my pleasure! If I left someone to suffer the last 20 alone for my own personal goals, I wouldn't be able to sleep. Its just not me. I'd rather think that I helped a tiny fraction than to know I abandoned someone.
You can "repay" it by pushing me up 3 Gap!
I would say you could push us both, but you'll have to catch Ann first! (Queen of the Mountains!!)

The support Ann and Michael provided to me at the end of the Tour de Cure was absolutely fantastic. It truly was an amazing act of selflessness. I know how competitive and driven they are, and they surely had their own goals for this ride, but they threw them all aside when they saw I needed some support. I won't ever forget it. Only hope I can "repay" them by helping another SCC member doing their first century some day.
As for me - I'm already focused on the next century and everything I will do better!!
PS - Ken - your chucking at me after it was over helped me, too! You made me realize "c'mon - it's only riding a bike for goodness sake."

Thanks Ken. We have a lot of folks who are doing their part to make this club what it is. Our priority is for everyone to enjoy riding with the club. Glad to do my part!

PS: Ann and Mike C. did the right thing and kept in contact with those that were starting to show worn down. Your "team" efforts are what makes the individuals want to keep riding! Kudos to you both for being there!

Ann, they say the mind is the first thing to go :-)
You sure weren't riding like an old lady though!!!
You all have definately inspired me though, I see a century in my future. Plus it will be nice to have a wheel to hang onto. 62 mile solo ride hurt me. I tried to draft off the tandem bike that passed me but they wouldn't slow down enough for me to keep up :-( :-( :-(

UGH! My bad, Neal!!! I am forgetful in my old age, you know!!!
And, kudos to Pete. Pete, you were riding so strong, I had no idea this was your first century. I thought you were an old veteran!!!
Great job to both of you!

I too thoroughly enjoyed the day. Glad to have so many new centurians out with us. Glad to ride it with you! It was certainly a great effort to raise the money that we did for such a worthy cause. I appreciate everyone's effort to help the club give back to our community.

It was a great ride. Congratulations to all who participated, and to the first time centurions. It was a challenging course toward the end but we did it. It also got pretty hot. I'll be back next year.
Mark your calendars for the Covington Century on August 7.

Darn, I always get forgotten. First you all sneak in a group picture when I'm not around and then Ann forgets all about me in her post. I think it must be a big conspiracy :-) :-) :-)

I am so proud of everyone that participated in this year's TDC!!! We had a total of 13 folks from SCC riding yesterday! I haven't received the final tally, but the last I checked, we raised $3,400!
Special shout-outs to members James Duncan and Joel Simmons. Both have diabetes and both completing their goals of the 100 mile and 62 mile respectively!! Awesome job, guys!
Also of note, David Grace, Steve Church, and Kristi Lovelace are now officially Centurions!!! Great job to all of you!
Thank you to all who rode and contributed. This year's ADA TDC has been a success!!

Congratuations to everyone who participated in the Tour de Cure ride Sunday. All you folks that rode the 100 miler are definately an inspiration. I will be riding the century with you for the Tour next year!
The 62 was plenty for me this year though. This ride made me realize that we need a few more hills around our little riding area here though. I thought it was just me getting tired the last 20 miles that made it seem hillier but the Garmin showed that the last 20 miles were the hilliest of the ride.
I'll defintaely be ready for the newby group on Wed though :-) :-)

We will leave on time because you will get gas Saturday, right Michael??
RE:Tour de Cure 2010
(5/14/2010 02:46 AM)
Steve, that depends on if I get gas before I get there or not. (Last time I forgot to fill up!)
No, that may be close. I'm guessing somewhere between 5:45 and 6:00, if we leave on time.
RE:Tour de Cure 2010
(5/14/2010 02:27 AM)
Yep - I'm in for the full century at 17-18. I call dibs on the draft behind Michael and his new killer wheels!!!
I won't ride in the caravan since I'm closer to the high school from my house. If you leave shop at 5 assume you'll get to the HS at about 5:45 and will plan to meet you there. Sound right?

I registered for the 30 miler but am thinking about doing the 60. I don't have the speed to ride with you guys but I do have pretty good endurance. Plan on driving with you guys at 5am Sunday morning.

I have a tent I can bring and I also have the SCC banner and Sigvaris banner which I will hang from the tent. If you don't caravan with us at 5AM, look for the banners. See you there!

I signed up for the century, and it will be my first, but I think I can do it. However, I will not be keeping pace with Anne and you all who will be going 17 - 18 mph. In order to go the distance, I think I will have to go about 15 mph. Is anybody else going that far that slow?
RE:Tour de Cure 2010
(5/12/2010 01:34 PM)
David Grace and I will ride with the group 17-18mph, for the 100Miler, rain or shine here we come.
RE:Tour de Cure 2010
(5/12/2010 12:49 PM)
FYI, we have permission to set up our SCC tent at the event. There is a reserved area for teams that raise $10,000. We won't be able to be a part of that area. But, we do have permission to stage our tent on the grassy area to the right of the high school entrance. This will be on the opposite side of the registration area. I think this will help us find each other before and after the ride.
