Eric Stone vs. The MountainThe Crew at the entrance to Brasstown Bald
The 2012 6 Gaps and 3 Gaps ride was on September 30th. Eric Stone, mechanic extraordinaire at Epic Bikes in McDonough was sick that weekend and couldn't make it. To help alleviate the deep sorrow that Eric must have felt Dr. Peto Fallas decided to organize a 3-Gaps do-over ride on November 18th. He called the ride "Eric Stone vs. The Mountain". Nine riders participated. The group met at Epic Bikes at 5AM on Sunday morning. They were in Helen, Georgia and on the road by 8:15AM. The weather forecast for the day was a low temperature of 33-degrees and a high of 60-degrees. The route had them climbing the worst mountain first - Hogpen Gap. Then they'd hit Jack's Gap and Unicoi Gap. They regrouped at the top of each mountain and after each descent. After the ride they ate at the Troll Tavern in Helen. Everyone made it home safely.

Holiday in the Hampton
The Southern Bicycle League is sponsoring a Holiday in the Hampton, a bike ride from Hampton, GA on Saturday, December 1st. The ride leaves from Ray's House on East Main Street at 9:00AM.
Come to the City of Hampton, a quaint town 30 miles south of Atlanta, GA to ride your bike on a crisp fall morning! New Belgium will sponsor the after-ride party. Mileage options include 73, 51 and 33 as well as a short Family Fun Ride. All routes pass by beautiful historic homes and old oaks and confederate cemeteries. Cyclists will gaze across rolling hills that conjure up cavalry and blaring bugles from the distant past. In fact, the city of Hampton welcomes all cyclists to visit Nash Farm Battlefield, a historic landscape that hasn't changed much since August 20, 1864.The SBL bike ride will depart at 9AM from Ray's House, a recently restored antebellum home on East Main Street where festivities are to occur throughout the day. Santa Claus is stopping by to greet cyclists and all are encouraged to fill up his goody bag with brand new toys. Connecting Henry will distribute the toys to needy children: Community Cares Toy Shop flyer. The other beneficiary of the ride is Praying For Paws Inc. an organization dedicated to rescuing homeless dogs. Their cookbook with yummy southern recipes will be on sale throughout the day.
Whatever option you choose, Southern Bicycle League's thoughtful routes will take you on a fun-filled day in the saddle where you will zoom past lakes and woods teaming with turkey and wild boar, and picturesque pastureland. Yes, you'll trudge up 'Winston Hill' and one or three other grades may test the quads but this rural farmland is known for its gentle rollers.
SBL's first-ever swap meet kicks off December 1st at Ray's House, as well. Bike shops, clubs and individuals can participate by signing up for a $25 bring-your-own table deal. The bike shops will unload last year's gear while clubs and individuals can swap out or sell that notorious unused gear.
Of course, we will serve New Belgium's beer and Just Dogs will be grilling up their famous frankfurters including bratwurst, kielbasa, and Italian sausage-all on soft fresh buns-their dogs are the best of the best and toppings top out at two-dozen (veggie dogs are available too)!
The quaint town of Brooks will host the main rest stop, homemade cookies and holiday goodies will be served at the Town Hall and street festivities and fabulous booths will decorate the streets like Christmas ornaments so stop and rest at 'Brooks Gift Stop' and SBL will haul back all purchases. The Woman's Club will also sell tickets to Brook's popular Holiday Tour of Homes, which takes place that Sunday. Not to be outdone, the town of Concord will be preparing their famous chicken salad-quite scrumptious-so those of you cycling the 51 or 73-mile route will get to taste Linda's famous sandwich. Concord Café's unique gift shop will also be open during the Hampton Ride and an array of locally handcrafted holiday gifts will be on display.

2013 SCC Kit Sample Sizes
Southern Crescent Cycling members, in the next few days please visit Trek McDonough to try on and sample the kits we are looking at for 2013. We have a full run of sizes for men and women in jerseys and shorts/bibs. If you try them on it will hopefully prevent anyone from purchasing the incorrect sizes. If you can't make it to the shop, here's a pdf of the manufacturer's size chart.
As for the design for 2013, that remains to be seen. However, as was done last year, members will have the opportunity to help select the final design. Here's a link to the manufacturer's website.

SCC was well represented at the 2012 ESI Ironman Augusta 70.3 triathlon on Sunday, September 30th . Neal Hamilton, Carlos Talbott, and Neil Farmer all successfully completed the race. This was Neal's second triathlon his first being the Peachtree City Int'l Triathlon in May of 2012. Carlos, a veteran triathlete by now with several races under his belt including the 2011 Augusta 70.3 and the April, 2012 TryCharleston 70.3 triathlon was in Augusta attempting to complete the race under 5 hours and 30 minutes. Neil, also a veteran, was hoping for a long shot at a podium slot.
In the end, they all had a great race. Neal made the leap from Olympic distance to 70.3. Carlos beat his previous Personal Record (PR) by 30 minutes. Neil bested the first two-thirds of the race but fell short on the run. You can read Neil's race report here. Great job guys! |

2012 Grant Park CriteriumThe weather held out long enough on Sunday, August 19th for a good day of fast paced cycling on the streets near and through Grant Park in Atlanta. Aaron Dameron competed before noon in the beginner's race. Aaron was followed by Cat 5 racers Eric Stone and Angel Reyes. Just after 2PM it was time for the Cat 4 racers. Junior Diaz and Lino Asiatico raced Cat 4. Finally, at around 3PM Charles Seward hit the course in the 35+/45+ race.
Check-out the photo album on the right. The images start with the last of the Women's Cat 3/4 race and end with the 35+/45+ race. Kudos to Aaron, Modesto, Angel, Charles, Eric, and Lino for a job well done. |
2012 PTC Sprint Triathlon
The 2012 Peachtree City Sprint Triathlon is in the books. SCC members David Grace, Greg Bush, Carlos Talbott, Kimberly Mayben, Pete Van den Elzen, Neil Farmer, and Kristen Bray competed. Kristen did not make the post race picture. Tommy Smith (not shown) and Leslie Momper (center) also were there.
The .3 mile swim, 14 mile bike, and 3.1 mile run race started 2 by 2 time trial style at Drake Field on the edge of Lake Peachtree. Racers lined-up informally by their estimated swim time. Confident in their abilities to swim Middle of the Pack (MOP), the majority of the SCC members started mid-group of the more than 900 racers. Amy Hill was there volunteering at the swim start to yell "GO".
The rest of the race was a blur with the occasional friend sighting and subsequent shout-out. Click these links for the full photo album and results. Kudos to the PTC Tri Club for hosting another great race!

2012 Savannah Century
Members of the Southern Crescent Cycling club rode by caravan to the coast for the Savannah Century on Saturday, September 1st. Some members had left the McDonough / Locust Grove area earlier in the week and were already there. In total the club had eleven members riding the full 100 mile course. They were Ken Barbet, Jorge Collado, Junior Diaz, Mike Dozier, Greg Ferrie, Peto Fallas, Neil Farmer, Angel Reyes, Joel Simmons, Bill Strang, and Carlos Talbott. Joel and his family made for an additional half-dozen or so riders.
On the ride down to Savannah we stopped at Grady’s Truck Stop & Grill in Metter, GA for a quick break and later had lunch at Toucan Café in Savannah.
After lunch we went to The Bicycle Link for packet pickup. The caravan left the bike shop for our downtown Savannah destinations of the Hampton Inn and Suites and Doubletree Hotel. Other club members were staying at the River Street Inn, and other hotels in the historic district.
Parking was valet only at the Hampton Inn, so unpacking (and later re-packing) was an exercise in the efficient use of the coveted luggage cart. The Doziers, Talbotts, and Farmers were on the same floor at the Hampton Inn. The Simmons' were on the floor above them.
Carlos made Saturday evening reservations for twenty at Bella’s Italian Café for a pre-ride pasta dinner. We ended up with a few more than that. As most of us were carbo-loading at Bella's, the Simmons family was preparing for the Midnight Garden Ride.
The Simmons family "Poppa's Peloton" included Joel, his twelve year old grandson Dawson, his youngest daughter and son-in-law. They all completed the entire 100 mile course.
Sunday morning arrived with better than expected weather. The sky was completely clear and the temperature was in the low 70’s. After a quick breakfast the group suited up and headed to the starting line at around 7:30am for the 8am start. The 850 or so riders were already starting to gather at The Distillery.
The peloton rolled out right at 8am behind a police escort for the mile or so before sending them off on their own. The petelon climbed the bridge over the Savannah River and raced down the other side reaching speeds close to 50-mph, then it was on to the pothole filled section of the course. The drone of the constant refrain “Hole” wore out the group but within a few miles they were passed that unwelcome section of the course. Traveling at a 25-mph pace, the peloton stretched out on the back roads around Savannah. The wind, while present was not the factor it was the previous year. However, as the sun rose in the sky, so did the heat and humidity also rise. It took its toll.
We were all much better prepared for this century than the Wilson 100 the week before. All of us were loaded down with four or more water bottles, gel packs, electrolyte supplement tablets, bananas, and more. This was going to be a nonstop sub-4 hour century but that wasn’t to be. The first member off the back of the peloton was Neil. He just wasn’t feeling it! Everyone else stayed with the peloton until either the 50 mile point, where Bill succumbed to cramps, or the 80 to 90 mile point where all but Peto, Carlos and Jorge were casted out. All except for Angel, that is, who almost missed the mass start and never was able to recover after a flat tubular tire only 17 miles into the course. Peto finished second in 4 hours and 10 minutes. He was right behind a rider who somehow was able to rejoin the peloton several times with the aid of a SAG vehicle. No, the rider wasn’t drafting behind the vehicle. He and his bike were all loaded up comfy and cozy inside the back of a van, hatch open, speeding through the back roads of Georgia to somewhere just beyond the peloton. That’s taking SAG support to its limits. Carlos finished in 4 hours and 11 minutes. Jorge finished up front in the mix somewhere with Carlos and Peto. Everyone else finished somewhere after them.
The "I got you Bro" award goes to Jorge for his valiant efforts to keep the group together. Junior was vying for that coveted award last year but was disqualified after reportedly leaving Peto to the buzzards shortly after the start. This year Peto had an axe to grind and it showed.
Overall, it was a great century for the club. We had awesome club participation and were probably the largest single group in club kit. The rest stops were plentiful and well stocked. The riders were fun and friendly, except for the grumpy elderly gentleman that had words with Junior. Junior's reply, as described by Mike, was that “Junior killed him with kindness”. Way to go Junior!
We ate dinner at Tubby’s at the River Street Inn on Sunday night. The whole of River Street was abuzz with people enjoying the Labor Day weekend. So much so that it took us almost an hour to decide where we’d eat and another 45 minutes to get a table for thirteen.
Our condolences to Junior and Johanna Diaz on the passing of Johanna’s grandmother. They received the sad news as we all waited at The Distillery for more riders to finish the century.

2012 PTC Sprint Triathlon Analysis
As with the olympic distance triathlon in Peachtree City in May of this year, again, we took some of the numbers from the Peachtree City Sprint Triathlon on Saturday, August 18th, 2012 and culled through the results. To keep things simple we just looked at the results from the men's division and charted those results by overall finish placement and the time in each segment of the race. That means if a racer finished 136th overall amongst the male racers then each chart will show that racer as 136th horizontally on the chart. The times are in minutes and are in respect to the 0.3 mile swim, 14 mile bike, and 3.1 mile run segments.
The 5 SCC members that competed out of the almost 600 male finishers are indicated in red on each chart. As the swim chart indicates, the abilities of the racers in the swim segment were varied. Even the top finishers took between 6:30 and 10 minutes to complete that segment. If that range was carried across to the bike segment the same racers would have finished between 30 and 46 minutes. As expected, SCC members did well in the bike segment as indicated by the red dots in the lower portion of the trend line. The chart of the run segment of the race shows slightly less ability to close out the race. Overall, SCC members did very well finishing in the top half of those that competed.

2012 Jackson Brevet RoundupThe 2012 Jackson Brevet is in the books. A dozen or so Southern Crescent Cycling members made the trip to Braselton, Georgia. This was a charity ride to raise funds to fight Aplastic Anemia, and the ride was well attended by riders from all over Atlanta. The weather was perfect for a ride so we took the opportunity to take a few pictures. A link to the photo album is on the right.
As the ride started the faster riders led the group out. The course was marked with a yellow "J". Unfortunately, Jorge and Neil along with a few other riders didn't see the marker and missed one of the first turns. Since they were in front of the group they kept going as calls from the rest of their group went unheard. When they finally looked back the group was gone. Undaunted they continued on, in the wrong direction, following ride marks on the road used for another ride. The Bicycle Ride Across Georgia (BRAG) had just come through the area only weeks before. Anyway, after some creative orienteering, Jorge, Neil, and another rider, David Harding, met up with the SCC group at the last rest stop near the 80 mile point. Overall, it was a fun but tiring day. Kudos to the ride organizers and volunteers, and thanks to Tim Kohl of Epic Bikes for the pre-ride breakfast. |
A few pictures from before, during and after the Jackson Brevet.

Peachtree Int'l Triathlon Analysis
A week has passed since the Peachtree Int'l Triathlon and SuperSprint Triathlon on May 19th. Southern Crescent Cycling had several members in the international distance race and one member in the supersprint race. All of our men and women racers did very well with three of them podiuming. Carlos Talbott placed third in the Clydesdale division. Neil Farmer placed third in the M50-54 age-group. Greg Bush placed first in the M55-59 age-group in the supersprint.
With those results in mind we took the men's overall results from the international distance race and culled through them to find the placement for the six male SCC members that competed in that race. The six are Neil Farmer, Carlos Talbott, Dan Gutierrez, Trey Hair, Marriner Smith, and Neal Hamilton. They are indicated in red. Each chart shows the time to complete the segment on the left and the overall placement at the bottom. The blue and red diamonds represent the 350, or so, men that competed in the race. As you can see, SCC members were all over the place on the swim. This seems to reflect the varied ability of the entire field. The bike and run segments seems more compressed but that is probably just a reflection of the wider increments in the chart. Even so, as expected, SCC members nailed the bike. The run chart shows an area for improvement with many of the red diamonds on the upper portion of the plotted blue diamonds. The transitions were not charted but as is often said, you can win a race in transition but you sure can lose it. We'll try to improve those times as well in the next few months.
We apologize to our women competitors, Isabel Gutierrez and Kimberly Mayben, and supersprinter Greg Bush for not including their results in the charts. Each data point was entered manually so after finishing the men's results we'd had enough and quit.
This is especially important when we have members competing. Don't forget the club group rides Monday through Thursday at 6:15pm. Check the calendar for details. |

Macon Cycling Classic
Saturday, April 14th brought us the 2012 Macon Cycling Classic Criterium race followed on Sunday, April 15th by the Monroe County Road Race. Several Southern Crescent Cycling team members participated in both events. Good job team. Find out more at http://www.maconcyclingclassic.com/
Tony Serrano Post-Ride RoundupThe skies were clear and the temperature was perfect, from the mid-40's in the morning to the mid-70's in the afternoon. Rollout was at 8:35am. Most of the SCC riders collected at the back of the staging area before the start. After the start, the line of riders stretched out as they meandered through the city of Monroe. The SCC riders took the opportunity to re-organize as a group. Most of us were riding the 100 mile option. Somewhere before the first rest stop we lost a few riders from our group. One rider had a flat and a second rode into a ditch. Both riders were okay but several more SCC riders stopped to assist. Those in the front traveled on unaware of what had happened. That's our story anyway!
Rest stop #2 was our first stop. The club stopped at each subsequent rest stop on the 100 mile route to regroup before what seemed like a sprint to the next rest stop. Each station was well supported with cheerful volunteers and stocked with all sorts of fruit, cookies, peanuts, pretzels, sandwiches, cold water and Gatorade. A volunteer reported that 672 riders participated in this year's ride. The ride was well attended. One of our members, Susan Farmer had the opportunity to ride with the Serrano family. She took a few pictures. They're included in the photo album on the right. Enjoy! |
SCC and SBL Club Affiliation
The board of Southern Crescent Cycling is proud to announce a mutual club affiliation agreement with the Southern Bicycle League (SBL). If you're not familiar with the SBL you still may know of the Wilson 100 Century. The "Wilson" named after former SBL President Scott Wilson, is a very popular event for Metro Atlanta cyclists in Senoia, Georgia. SBL affiliation will provide your board with a base of knowledge of which they may access as our club continues to grow. As an SCC member you'll receive a $5 discount off an SBL membership, should you choose to join the SBL. SBL membership allows you to receive a discount on Wilson 100 registration. SBL affiliation costs Southern Crescent Cycling and its members nothing. We will display their logo on our website and they will display ours. They will include our rides on their ride calendar and hopefully, both clubs will continue to grow and promote safe cycling. Find out more about the SBL at http://www.bikesbl.org/.

Rock Hill Bicycle Club Classic
Good luck to SCC club members Obie Ingram and John Harsch on Saturday and Sunday, March 31st and April 1st, as they compete in the Rock Hill Bicycle Club Classic. The first day of the 2012 RHBC Classic features a challenging road race, located in and around Western York County. This 28 mile, multi-loop race allows riders to test themselves through rolling/hilly countryside while racing thru several small SC towns. Start / Finish is at York Middle School in York, SC (SC 321 south of York). The second day of the 2012 RHBC Classic features the Winthrop Lake Criterium. This all-day event provides ample opportunities for new and experienced racers to test their skills against racers from all over the country along a 1 mile loop course. Winthrop Lake provides the perfect venue for spectators to watch the multi-lap race. Find out more at http://www.rockhillbicycleclub.com/
Georgia Rides to the CapitolThe 2012 GARTTC event is in the books. Twenty-five or so riders from the Epic Bikes and Trek McDonough bike shops left the McDonough city hall at 8am with a full police escort. They headed north on GA Hwy 155 to meet up with other riders from Conyers, Stone Mountain, and Decatur at the East Lake MARTA station. From the MARTA station the group headed west to the join up with other riders from Roswell and Alpharetta before the final leg of the ride to the steps of the capitol.
At the capitol the riders were addressed by event organizers, and state and local officials. The return trip from the capitol followed a different route with the majority of the SCC riders opting to ride south by the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary down Moreland Avenue / GA-42. Check out the article in the Henry Herald. |
Fouche Gap Road Race
Good luck to the Southern Crescent Cycling Road Race Team members Junior Diaz, Frank Santoyo, and Charles Seward as they compete in the Fouche Gap Road Race in Rome, Georgia on Saturday, April 7th. The Fouche Gap Road Race will be held in Floyd County, with a convenient start less than 5 miles to downtown Rome GA. The course winds through the undulating backroads of Floyd County. Each passes scenic Rocky Mountain Park. All races will finish atop Fouche Gap on the final lap. The final section of road in red will be closed to motor vehicles on race day. Riders doing multiple laps will only climb the mountain at the end of the race.
Tony Serrano Century
As the SCC Road Race team is competing in Rome, Georgia, at the Fouche Gap Road Race on Saturday, April 7th many other SCC members will be riding the roads of Walton County from Monroe to Social Circle, Good Hope, Bostwick, and North High Shoals in the Tony Serrano Century ride. Upwards of two dozen club members are expected to participate in this popular ride which features 100, 62, 37, and 10 mile options. The pre-ride plan is to carpool caravan to Monroe from the Trek McDonough bike shop at 6:30am. David Mills is the club lead for this event.
SCC Tri Team First OWS
Isabel Gutierrez, Trey Hair, Neal Hamilton, and Neil Farmer hit the open water on Sunday, April 1st for the first Open Water Swim session for the Southern Crescent Triathlon Team for the 2012 race season. The plan was to swim 1 mile in the late afternoon when the water was warm and there was minimal boat traffic on the lake. Susan Farmer drove the chase boat. The planned distance is just a bit more than the .93 miles they'll each have to swim during the Peachtree International Triathlon (PIT) in Peachtree City on May 19th. Since this was our first swim session some time was spent getting used to new equipment purchased over the winter (and getting a good feel for the enormity of the task). We are happy to report that the water temperature was perfect and everyone survived the ordeal.
2012 Georgia Rides to the Capitol
On Tuesday, March 27th Southern Crescent Cycling will participate in the Georgia Bikes annual Georgia Rides to the Capitol event to promote cycling in Georgia. Club members will meet at the Epic Bikes store on Jonesboro Road and Trek McDonough store on GA-20 at 7:00am. They'll depart promptly at 7:30am before rallying in downtown McDonough at 8:00am. From McDonough riders will be escorted north on GA Hwy 155 for much, but not all, of the way to the East Lake MARTA station near Decatur. From there it's a slow ride to the capitol as we pickup other riders along the way. At the capitol riders are addressed by various politicians and the ride organizers. This is a fun event but it does take much of the day. The return ride is unescorted and may not follow the same route used that morning. Some riders me elect to join the group somewhere along the route. Wear your Southern Crescent Cycling kit, if you've got it. The new kit won't arrive until sometime in early April. SCC ride leader Isabel Gutierrez is leaving from the Trek McDonough store. Please check in with Isabel via Facefook so she'll know where you are before the ride. Thanks in advance to our local bike shops for the SAG support and to those that have volunteered to help.

SCC Rides the Tour de PikeOn Saturday, March 17th about thirty Southern Crescent Cycling members participated in the 15th Annual Tour de Pike in Pike County, Georgia. Riders started at 8:30am from downtown Concord and rode through the small towns that dot the area. The event, organized by the Kiwanis Club of Pike County, featured 100, 66, 33, and 17 mile distance options. SCC had riders on the 33, 66, and 100 mile route. The roads were great, scenery was beautiful and the routes were well planned.
Kudos to the Pike County Sheriff's Department and Paramedics. One of our members stayed with a rider after he took a nasty spill. She called 911 and stayed with him until paramedics arrived and then stayed with his bike until the SAG vehicle picked it up. |

Survey Says!
The results of the SCC 2012 survey are in. Designed to identify where club resources should be allocated; the survey was open for input from December 30, 2011 through February 7, 2012. During that time the survey was promoted on the SCC Facebook page. Fifty-three members and non-members took the time to complete the survey. The average time taken was about six to seven minutes although a few survey takers took as little as 2 minutes and one individual took over 4 hours.
The survey asked nine questions. Respondents indicated whether or not they thought certain issues were important to the club and/or themselves, as well as, their interest in volunteering and a club supported cycling team. Respondents where also offered the opportunity to add additional comments. Many of you did just that. Lastly, those that provided an e-mail address were entered in a drawing for a $20 gift card to be presented at the annual meeting on Saturday, February 11.
The questions were as follows.
1. What activities are important for the club? Group rides and helping new riders were considered very important by respondents overwhelmingly. Organizing a club century or other event was also considered important to a lesser degree. Respondents were somewhere between important and neutral on fundraising for charities, cycling advocacy and safety seminars, events to gain members, community work, and parties. A few respondents indicated that some of the activities were unimportant.
2. What activities are important to you? As one might expect, the activities of interest to individuals echoed those that respondents thought that the club should support.
3. How much time do you expect to participate in club activities each month? 38% of respondents said 1-9 hours, 36% said 10-19 hours, and 26% of respondents said 20-39 hours
4. Of that time, what percentage do you expect to be riding with SCC members? 24% of respondents said 100%, 50% said 75%, and 18% of respondents said 50%
5. Are the club membership dues of $25 too high? 65% of respondents thought the dues were just right, 18% thought the dues should be lower, and 16% of respondents preferred higher dues with a club jersey included.
6. Would you be willing to serve? 78% of respondents said NO
7. Would you be willing to volunteer? 57% of respondents said NO
8. Should the club support a road racing and mountain biking team? 73% of respondents were in favor of supporting an SCC team.
9. Would you participate as a member of an SCC team? 55% of respondents preferred to let others do the racing.
Most of the additional comments were regarding either group rides or teams. Some of the group ride comments were from respondents who were concerned about safety and/or wanted the groups better defined. Several respondents expressed interest in group rides that would be more appropriate for beginners or slower riders. The team comments stated an interest in a track racing team and a triathlon team.
That’s a quick summary of the 2012 SCC survey.
