Safety Policy
Your club takes safety very seriously. Cycling is an enjoyable activity that can have significant health benefits. Yet, like other physically active sports, cycling has many inherent risks.
These risks can be mitigated through the use of properly fitted and maintained equipment, by obeying traffic laws, by understanding proper “bike” etiquette when riding in a group, and most importantly, by always paying attention while cycling.
We welcome members who are as concerned with safe cycling as we are. An important step in joining Southern Crescent Cycling, or in renewing your membership is to read, understand, and accept the following Safety Policy.
1 - Observe the Law
• Members should be aware that every person riding a bicycle on a roadway is granted all the rights and subject to all of the duties of the motor vehicle driver.
• Members shall obey all motor vehicle and bicycle laws of the state(s) in which they are riding.
• Members should be familiar with Georgia bike law.
• Proper use of hand signals to indicate turning and/or stopping are required.
• Always ride with traffic, never against it.
2 - Club Rules
• All members must check-in at the ride start and provide the required emergency contact information to the ride leader.
• All non-members riding for the first time must also check in with the ride leader and sign the club liability waiver.
• Helmets must be worn on all SCC rides.
• Club policy forbids calling out “Clear!” at an intersection. Conditions can change for the following riders faster than you think.
• Any member who witnesses another member riding in such a manner as to endanger other cyclists should discreetly discuss their concern with that member, explaining the transgression(s) that have occurred, and the reason(s) they are hazardous. Should the offending member fail to correct the riding behavior, a complaint should be made to the club’s ride leader who will follow the club’s Safe Riding Enforcement Procedure.
• Riders WILL NOT run stop signs and red lights, or swarm around cars at stop signs and red lights. We will wait our turn and move through as one large group.
3 - Ride Etiquette
• Be predictable. Call out your intentions, e.g. slowing, stopping, etc. Use hand signals.
• Call out and point to hazards e.g. Hole! Rough Road! Car Back! Glass! Gravel!
• Safely move to the right when you hear “car-back” and repeat the warning so that riders in front of you are alerted.
• With few exceptions always pass other riders on the left. In all cases, whenever passing a rider the “overtaking” rider shall call out “on your left” or “on your right” as the case may be.
• Stop to regroup after crossing a traffic light controlled intersection so that riders who may not have been able to “make the light” will not be encouraged to cross on the red.
• Members must be courteous and share the road with motorized vehicles, pedestrians and other cyclists. This includes riding single file on busy roads, moving to the right safely when "car back" is called to allow vehicles to safely pass.
• Notify the ride leader if you decide to “drop” or leave a ride before its completion.
• All members are strongly encouraged to accept valid criticism graciously and understand that the person delivering such criticism is doing so in the best interest of the club and all of its members.
4 – Equipment
• A proper fitting helmet is required on all club rides.
• Members shall ensure that their bicycle is in good condition, and that they know how to ride it properly.
• Members must carry the necessary equipment and should be capable of repairing a flat if necessary.
• The law states lights are required on any ride that extends past dusk.
5 - Miscellaneous
• Members shall be properly prepared for the ride they have chosen. This includes: choosing a ride of pace, length and terrain matched to their ability, having suitable clothing for the expected weather conditions, carrying adequate fluids, and carrying spare tubes, pump and tools, etc.
• Each member individually shall determine whether or not weather and road conditions are suitable for cycling and shall take full responsibility for cycling in any and all conditions that will be encountered during the course of the ride.
• It is highly advised that members carry a cell phone and emergency contact information to summon help should they become lost, injured, or otherwise separated from the group.

SCC Group Rides
Southern Crescent Cycling has several official group rides Monday-Thursday leaving from Epic Bikes and Trek of McDonough and various unofficial rides are formed on the weekends and during the winter. The rides during the winter months are more dependent upon the weather as one might expect. There are typically four groups of riders if participation allows. The groups are categorized as:
“A” – This group is for those focused on fast riding and race training. The group typically averages 20 mph and above. This is a very vigorous ride. Only attempt if you are very experienced and know the routes. No-Drop
“B Fast” – This group is for those who are looking to get faster, compete among themselves, and use the ride as a stepping stone to the “A” group. The group typically averages 18 to 20 mph. Drop on Wednesday. Only attempt this ride if you are not going to complain about getting spit out the back end of the group when speed reach 25 to 30 mph on some roads. No-Drop on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.
“B” – This group is focused on riding as a group, not racing. Typical pace is generally between 16 and 17+ mph and is a No-Drop group. Most people will ride in this group. Expect to be able to pedal your bike to speeds of 20 to 25 mph on some roads.
“C or Intermediate/Novice” – This group which averages between 14 and 16 mph is a No-Drop group. Riders getting started in a group ride or riders that are not sure where to ride or what average speeds mean then ride in the C Group.
"Newbie" – The pace of this group is set by the riders. The average pace is typically 10 to 14 mph and it is a No-Drop group. We have two newbie riders each week. Monday at Epic and Saturday at Trek.
The roll out times for each group will be staggered. The A Group will roll out first followed by the slower groups at about 60 second intervals.
The A Group will be a drop ride only with regrouping / slow pedal after red-lights and stop signs, if needed.
The B-Fast Group ride on Wednesday from Epic will also be a drop ride. The Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday B-Fast Group rides will be no-drop rides. The Wednesday B-Fast Group and B-Group should ride the same route.
Remember that cycling has inherent risks, obey the law, be courteous to motorists and other riders, and be predictable.
We strongly recommend that people join SCC to receive all the benefits of club membership however new riders that are not SCC members are required to sign a SCC Waiver and sign in with the ride leader with emergency contact information at the beginning of the ride.
Riders meet at Epic Bikes at 1993 Jonesboro Rd., McDonough, GA 30253 on Monday and Wednesday and at Atlanta Trek at 120 Westridge Pkwy., McDonough, GA 30253 on Tuesday and Thursday at 6pm in the summer.
Minors 16 years of age and older may ride unaccompanied during SCC group rides if a signed waiver has been provided to the club. Minor riders 16 years of age and younger may ride during SCC group rides if a signed waiver has been provided to the club and they are accompanied by a parent or guardian. Any rider under 18 years of age must provide an emergency contact telephone number.
Riders who participate in club rides that choose to ride with earphones or earbuds should only use one earbud. The second earbud which would be worn on the traffic side (usually the left ear) will not be used. The volume will be kept at a level which allows the rider to hear and communicate with other riders in the group.
For a list of what rides are scheduled when and where see the website Calendar or go to the Southern Crescent Cycling Facebook page.

A Word About Our Corporate Members
The SCC board decided at our last meeting that we needed to better recognize our corporate members. To do that we plan to include a brief article on the club website. Today we're highlighting our Gold corporate members Fallas Family Vision. But before we discuss vision we'd like to mention some of the inner workings of club finances. Each year the board solicits businesses to donate to the club. The money is used to maintain our various memberships in affiliated organizations like SORBA, League of American Bicyclists, and USA Cycling. Other funds are used to provide information online via RidewithGPS.com, and BikeSCC.org, of course. A small amount of money is used on administrative costs. The bulk of all money raised is returned back to the members in the form of our annual End of Season party and kit sales. In fact, kit sales signify the bulk of the money raised. Specifically, this year, each kit, one jersey and one pair of shorts, cost the club $90. We sold the first pair to individual members for $50 each, the first two pair for family members. That's a $40 loss to the club per pair. If you bought a second kit at about $65 the club only lost $25 per pair. That's no way to run a business but it''s a great way to run a bike club. That's where our corporate members come into play. Through their generous donations, the club has thrived. And, we, the club board, want them to thrive as well. So if there is anything you can take away from this article is when you need something like eyeglasses, or New York Pizza, or a Chiropractor, or tires, or aviation parts, or a Realtor, or Homeowners Association management services please think of our corporate members...and please tell your friends. It goes without saying but we'll do it anyway, please support your local bike shops (LBS), Epic Bikes and Atlanta Trek. They provide the club with much more support than many of us will ever know.
2013 Monday Novice Ride Leaders from Epic and Thursday C-Group Leaders from Trek

Triathlon Team
Team captains were selected at the SCC annual meeting on January February 21st. Neil Farmer is the captain for 2013. We're looking forward to a good first year from this team. Most of the members have some race experience race. We'll use this experience to help develop those athletes that may not have competed before. As the weather improves we'll be posting training sessions of the SCC calendar. Please try to attend as many of these as possible. If you'd like to be a member of the triathlon team please e-mail Neil at secretary@bikescc.org.
Neil is looking forward to open water swim sessions, drafting and non-drafting bike rides, speed training for the run, and working through the finer points of a smooth and efficient transition. So, get your training plans ready, identify your A, B, and C races for the year, and get going.

Augusta 70.3 Training Plan
20 Week Augusta 70.3 Training Plan Chart
With the 2012 Peachtree City Triathlon behind us and the 2012 Augusta 70.3 race on September 30th is only weeks away it's time to refocus our training. We've created an intermediate level 20 week training plan for members to use as they prepare for this, our most important triathlon of the year. The plan creates stair-steps of increasing training broken by periods of recovery and taper as can be seen in the chart. As with any training plan, it should be used as a guide to help you prepare for the race. If training is missed, don't sweat it. Remember, it's better to be 10% under-trained than 10% over-trained. The Augusta 70.3 is a wave start with an easy river swim downstream with the current. Sighting is not an issue with this swim course as the river's edge is easy to follow all the way to the boat ramp exit at the transition area. Weeds in the river might be the only hazard for swimmers. Emphasis should be put on the run segment as this is the area where SCC members should see the most benefit. Download the plan here.

The exact address is: Sky Zone, 1425 Market Blvd, Roswell, GA 30076. Registration for all riders will open at 5:15 a.m. Anyone who arrives after 6:15 a.m. will not be allowed to ride on Ga. 400.

The 100 mile ride is over 8500 feet of climbing up short steep hills that build your base strength! Perfect training for that fall triathlon, or that late season race, or maybe you just want to burn over 8700 calories! The 60 Mile ride also ascends 5500 feet and will climb the "Three Sisters" same as the 100 milers do. The Three sisters are three short climbs near the end of the ride in Roswell. You will have cheering fans as you pedal squares up the Big Sister in Mountain Park and Middle Sister as you pound your way through Wildwood Springs and finally you will roll up the Little Sister in Waverly Hall. Look for the local kids to have lemonade stands as an excuse to stop or use the cheers of neighbors to help you up the hill!

SCC Kit - Second OrderClub Treasurer, David Mills is now taking orders for the second SCC kit buy. See the order information below. With the increased sponsor funds collected this year we were able to offer the new kit at only $50, first pair only. This is significantly less than the $75 charged for a jersey and shorts last year. Orders over the first pair are discounted 30%. For example, if a member ordered a first kit pair of bib shorts and a jersey, plus a tri-top and tri-shorts the total would be only $113. That's $50 for the first pair and only $63 for the second pair.
You'll see that we've kept the same color combination from previous years. The kit survey we did last year seemed to indicate that members favored the blue, white, yellow, and black. Click images to enlarge. You must be a member to order. That's a good incentive to join now. Can't remember if you've already joined? Check the About Us page. Kit Order InformationBelow are the order form and size chart. At this time we are ONLY ordering Short Sleeve Jerseys, Bib and Regular Shorts, and Triathlon tops, bottoms, and Tri-suits.
All orders MUST use the official order form spreadsheet and e-mailed to treasurer@bikescc.org. No orders will be accepted via Facebook or text message. The special club price is $50 for ONE jersey & bib/shorts combo. This also applies to ONE tri-top and tri-shorts combo, or one triathlon suit. Additional orders will be discounted 30%. CCN Order Form and CCN Size Chart. The deadline for ordering is Sunday, May 12th. |

2013 Brooks Races
Junior Diaz and Jorge Collado (by Shane Mathews)
The Georgia Cup Brooks Spring races are in the books. Results On Saturday, March 9th Junior Diaz and Jorge Collado competed in the circuit race. Junior and Jorge placed 1st and 21st, respectively. As we know, cycling is a team sport. Junior said that Jorge "raced very smart ...he helped me cover all the attacks...no attack was successful, the pack reacted to everything". Jorge covered at least 4 or 5 of the attacks and Junior covered 4. By the 3rd lap they knew it was gonna be a pack sprint to the finish so they played it smart and started working for a good position. The pace got really fast. Halfway through the last lap Junior and Jorge founded ourselves a bit too far back with less than half a mile to go. Junior was blocked by at least 12 riders in front of him. He was able to follow a wheel that made a move and the next thing he knew he was at the last corner with 5 or 6 riders. Two of them went way too hot on that last curved and they went flying off the road--- almost taking out Junior with them. His front wheel was in the air for a second, he corrected and looked to the front--- all he saw was the Becks Cycling rider way ahead....way ahead. Junior gave it all he had and was able to pass him just in time. First place for SCC!

Hey, That's my Bike!
A recent thread on the slowtwitch forum was written by someone who had recovered his stolen bicycle. The thread's author tried to keep the original post brief, we’ll try to do the same. In the post he described how he kept his head and had a plan. Here’s the gist of it.
The bike was stolen from the owner’s driveway not 5 minutes after being ridden. The theft was reported to the police but they showed little interest in pursuing any investigation. The owner perused websites like craigslist and eBay. Within a few weeks, low and behold, there it was, a picture with a vague posting describing his bike on craigslist. It was for sale about an hour away at a substantial discount. The owner wanted to catch the thief red-handed but the police weren't interested so he decided to go it alone. The thief/seller wouldn't take calls from the area code where the bike had been stolen on what they would later learn was a prepaid cellphone. The owner used a phone from a different area code to make arrangements to meet the unsuspecting thief at a park. The owner took the details of the meeting to the police and they agreed to follow along. The trap was set.
The owner entered the park, he verified it was his stolen bike, signaled the police, and they arrested the crook. He was an 18 year old delinquent with a long juvenile record of thefts. This was his first arrest as an adult.
Upon further investigation of the bike, they found that the serial number had been removed and the frame had also been spray painted. To make matters worse, when the police arrived, the thief said the bike's owner was the crook. What gall!
These incidents bring to mind a question. In the same situation today, how would any of us be able to describe our bike should it be stolen, repainted, and the manufacturer's serial number removed? Replies to the slowtwitch thread offered a few suggestions. Put a business card in the seat tube or handlebar tube was one suggestion. Another reply suggested marking your bike in a way that would be unique and identifiable. Then take a picture of the mark for use should that dreaded day arrive.
First and foremost, prevention is the best cure. Stop the theft before it happens. Keep an eye on your bike and when that's not possible use a good quality lock correctly applied to secure it. We searched the web and found this flyer from the University of New Mexico. It's helpful in that it identifies the advantages and disadvantages of different lock types and how to best use them.
Another option to consider is the National Bike Registry. The NBR is a bit like microchips for dogs but instead of a chip they use a sticker. I can only imagine that a sticker would be much easier to remove than a piece of silicon the size of a grain of rice under the skin. Maybe the microchip analogy was a stretch. The NBR is probably not really gonna get your stolen bike back to you unless somewhere along the line it comes into the possession of someone who's not a crook. The police and a local bike shop are two entities that might fit into this category. Sadly, not all law enforcement organizations participate in the program. Here's the list. My own county and city police departments are not listed. I suppose that's why they've got so many obviously stolen and recovered bikes that have never been returned to their owners. Also, if the serial number has been removed you're probably out of luck too.
Don't let your bike get gone! Take pictures of your bike. Record the serial number. Keep your bike securely stowed when not in use.

Ironman TriClub Program
The World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) has recently implemented their Ironman TriClub Program.
If you're an SCC member and you're registering for an Ironman branded 70.3 or 140.6 event, don't forget to select "Southern Crescent Cycling" from the teams list. The club earns points for each registration. What we can do with the points remains to be seen but heck, it's worth a try.

IMBA SORBA Club Membership
With winter here and the road cycling season all but over it's time to think of other things cycling related that our restless members might enjoy. To that end, the club has joined the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association (SORBA) of the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA).
What does this do for our members? For one, it lets them and others in the mountain biking community know that SCC is a place where they can go to find like minded riders. Using our member directory we'll be able to get the word out about local MTB events and hopefully provide just one more avenue for members to release some pent up "off-season" energy and maybe get a little dirty in the process. It does not provide individual memberships to IMBA or SORBA for SCC members. You'll have to do that on your own.
Stay tuned for more information and look for lots of MTB pictures coming soon from Dauset Trails in Jackson, the Georgia International Horse Park (GIHP) in Conyers, and the Clayton County International Park (CCIP) in Jonesboro. The club's new GoPro Hero3 is charged and ready to go as well.

The club bought four (4) 18" x 12" SAG wagon vehicle signs. We'll use them on those occasions when the club has a large presence and fortunate enough to have SAG support. Last year we were lucky enough to often have Diane Dozier follow along as the club participated in rides. These signs should make all of us safer. Riders will be safer because we'll know the SCC SAG wagon when they see it. The SAG wagon driver(s) will be safer because other drivers will know better what to expect from them. And other drivers will be safer because they'll be better prepared to expect cyclist on the road and the SAG wagon.
The scenario where a driver can't understand why another driver will not pass cyclists even as several opportunities come and go, comes to mind. The reason is the driver chooses to stay behind the riders is because they are an unidentified support vehicle. That won't be the case anymore. It's a win, win situation!

TryCharleston Triathlon
Even Before the 2013 race season has started several SCC members have already set their sights on the next must do club race. Each year we try to create a list of club "sanctioned" events where we expect good member participation. The TryCharleston Sprint and Half iron distance (70.3) triathlons will be on that list as several members have already registered for both races. Since this race is scheduled early in the season on April 20th we thought we'd get the word out to our members so they can register and start training now. December 2nd is 20 weeks from race day and the perfect time to get started. Tri Team captain Neil Farmer has created a training plan for the those interested in competing in the 70.3 race. Download the plan here in pdf format. For disclosure, Neil asked that we emphasis that he is not a triathlon coach but just another athlete like most of us. However, this is the plan by which he plans to train. It's an intermediate level plan and not recommended for beginners. As always, please consult with a physician before starting any exercise regiment. Stay tuned for updates regarding lodging recommendations, etc.
2013 Ironman Florida
Kimberly Mayben, Tommy Smith, and Marriner Smith - you are an IRONMAN! Congratulations to Kimberly, Tommy, and Marriner for completing the 2012 Ironman Florida triathlon on Saturday, November 3rd in Panama City Beach, Florida.
Ironman Florida is arguably the most popular full 140.6 mile distance triathlon in the world as far as participation is concerned. The race's approximately 3400 slots typically sell out within minutes after online registration opens. After watching streaming online video of the race at the SCC End of Season Party on Saturday night several more of our members decided to take the plunge by registering for the 2013 race. You can expect to see Stephanie Critchfield, Neil Farmer, Leslie Momper, Jason Reeves, and Carlos Talbott doing a lot of swimming, running and, of course, cycling during the next 12 months. Former SCC members Jerry and Cheryl Grissom who now live in Alabama will also be racing. We'll keep you posted on their progress.

Merry Christmas SCC
The SCC board met on Saturday, December 15th to discuss plans for 2013, the new club kit design, club teams, etc. We also took a minute to present our Christmas Wish List. Apparently, we have been good all year and Santa was generous to us. In the next few weeks the club will be the proud owner of a new GoPro Hero3 Black HD vdeo camera with a bicycle bracket and helmet mount. Members will be able to sign-out the camera to record their activities in full HD video. We'll also be ordering four (4) magnetic SAG (Support And Gear) vehicle signs, club vehicle stickers and postcards.
We looking forward to a fun and fit 2013 and now we'll be able to document the adventure for friends and family.
Best Holiday Wishes to all our SCC members and their familes.
